Jo Brierley

Since I was little I’ve loved being outside, I spent much of my childhood abroad, the most memorable years in Bahrain, a tiny island in the Arabian/Persian Gulf. Climbing trees and wandering around barefoot

I learnt to ski age 4 and this passion drove me to spend two winters working and skiing in the French Alps. It also influenced my decision to live in Glasgow and spending my weekends in the hills and mountains. I trained to be a ski patroller which kept me cold and wet for unending weekends in the highlands.

My sister was into yoga and meditation and it rubbed off on me and my mum. My first yoga teacher was in Glasgow back in the early 90’s, she opened my eyes to not only yoga but to the beginnings of meditation and relaxation. Moving to Sheffield in the mid 90’s felt like coming home. Such a friendly, connected place. The Peak satisfied my then passion for climbing and now its where I go to unravel stuff and stretch my body and lungs.

I discovered aromatherapy through my sister who sent me some Geranium essential oil. Even though I thought it smelled horrid it lit a fire for these little treasures that continues through to today. They started me on my journey to be a therapist.

When my dad died suddenly in 2000 I got to use my Aromatherapy and Energy work skills on myself to good effect. My responses to strong emotions were very unhealthy in those days and most of my grief was expressed through pain in my body: subsequently I’ve experienced many different forms of therapy on my journey to balance. Some subtle like EFT or cranio-sacral, some not so, such as chiropractic or the year long Shamanic healing techniques course I did. If I don’t think I can help a client I can usually point them in a useful direction with recommendations too.

My most recent professional ventures have been about adapting my massage style to incorporate elbows and forearms and the like, to save my much used hands; also connecting deep into the belly muscles, releasing stress and trauma from the Psoas and nearby pelvic muscle groups. My massage work took a massive shift in 2013 and I now work more gently (to favour my tired hands and arms) but we go deep.

On a personal level I’ve explored Non-Violent Communications, Marshall Rosenberg’s whole new language based on needs and feelings. As many of my friends and acquaintances were experiencing Spiritual Emergence in one form or another; I joined a group to discuss spiritual awakening and the management of the emergencies that can be part of this on going process. Yoga continues to be a bedrock in my life. I highly recommend finding a physical~spiritual practice that suits you. Take time to find the right form and teacher. You can read about my journey into earth based medicine (Shamanism etc) here.  My current journey is into self-acceptance, of myself and others, in all our glory!

My experience and training in aromatherapy:

Back in the mid 90's my sister sent me some top quality Geranium essential oil as a present in the post, since then I've been hooked on Aromatherapy and essential oils.

My particular interest is in their application for emotional, psychological and spiritual wellbeing, but it all began with 'the body' and my journey back to good health from a slipped disc in my upper spine.

I tailor each Holistic Aromatherapy Massage to the clients needs. My prefered appointment is the hour and a half, specifically to ensure we have time to determine what your needs are and how Aromatherapy and Massage can help. To book see the information below.

I trained as a Holistic Aromatherapist at the Northern School of Aromatherapy in Mirfield, West Yorkshire in 1998. Since then I have been using essential oils, mostly in conjunction with massage, to help clients (and friends and family) with their problems. A drop of Lavender *on your pillow at night helps you with disturbed sleep. A Geranium* bath might be the solution to that PMT. Peppermint* inhalations are just the thing for stubborn sinus problems. Although there are contra-indications and rules to follow, it's a wonderful way to maintain health and there are some great books out there too.

Holistic Values Statement

This Statement was composed by William Bloom in 2008 after consulting over 200 other Values Statements including the UN Declaration on Human Rights, The Earth Charter and the UK Inter Faith Code of Conduct. The values named here are high ideals and are always work in progress.

These values are presented in no particular order of priority.

Self-responsibility: I am actively committed to managing my own health and development; and I value life as an ongoing process of learning.

Life Style: I maintain a life style and gain my income in ways that benefit and do no harm.

Relationships: At home, at work and in my community, I am committed to respectful, loving and positive relationships.

Spirituality: I recognize spirituality to be a normal and healthy part of daily life, as people experience the wonder of nature and all creation; and I celebrate the many paths that explore this wonder and its meaning.

Inclusion and Respect: I welcome diversity of belief, faith, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, intellect, ability and age – and value the unique contribution of every individual.

Environment: I recognise the sacred interdependence of all life and behave so as to protect the health and sustainability of our natural environment now and for future generations.

Global and Local Citizenship: I actively engage to build community, alleviate injustice and relieve suffering; and deplore any situation that limits the rights, development and fulfilment of any being.
